Job summary

We are delighted to offer an exciting 12-monthfixed-term or secondment opportunity for an experienced and motivated nurse to join our Structural Heart Team as a Band 7 Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS). This specialist role is based at the University Hospital of Wales, home to a rapidly expanding tertiary cardiology service that continues to grow from strength to strength.

While this post is advertised at Band 7, we would also consider a Band 6 trainee position for candidates who are unable to meet the essential criteria initially but demonstrate strong potential and a commitment to developing into the full CNS role.

This is a pivotal position within our multidisciplinary team, providing expert specialist care for patients undergoing assessment and treatment for structural heart conditions, including TAVI, Mitral/Tricuspid interventions, ASD/PFO closures, and other transcatheter therapies. As a key member of the service, you will support the coordination of the patient journey, deliver advanced clinical assessment, and act as a clinical expert and source of leadership within the speciality.

Main duties of the job

As a Structural Heart Clinical Nurse Specialist, you will provide advanced specialist assessment and management for patients undergoing structural heart interventions, acting as a primary contact for patients and families by offering clinical advice, education, and psychological support throughout the care pathway. You will coordinate the full patient journey--including referrals, pre-procedure workup, MDT preparation, consent support, and post-procedure follow-up--while working autonomously within nurse-led and telephone clinics. The role involves close collaboration with cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, imaging teams, anaesthetics, and the wider MDT to support procedural planning, as well as active participation in audit, service evaluation, quality improvement, data collection, and research. You will also provide clinical leadership, supervision, and education for junior staff and students, contributing to the development of evidence-based practice and innovation within structural heart disease management.
